a men's choir in Norfolk
This website is for the use of members and prospective members of Voicemale, a men's choir in Norfolk, England led by Stephanie Anderson.
We sing two-, three- or four-part harmony in a rich variety of styles including African songs, gospel songs, other sacred songs and songs from Georgia and Corsica. Here are three we performed in June 2015:
Kaana Kameme (from Africa, a message from a bride to her younger sister)
K'irialesa (from Georgia, conveying New Year's blessings)
Nero's Expedition (lamenting the emperor's failed attempt on Africa, sung here partly as a round)
We generally perform two or three times a year. We have contributed to Christmas entertainments and sung at private events as well as joining Stephanie's other choirs for combined concerts.
We rehearse from September to June inclusive from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on a Saturday. Usually the Saturdays are the second and fourth of the month and the fifth when there is a fifth.
2016-17 rehearsal dates are Sept. 3rd, 10th and 24th, Oct. 8th, 22nd and 29th, Nov. 12th and 26th, Dec. 10th and 17th, Jan. 14th and 28th, Feb. 11th and 25th, Mar. 11th and 25th, Apr. 8th, 22nd and 29th, May 13th and 27th, June 10th and 24th.
Our venue is the Salvation Army Hall in Aylsham (NR11 6DU). The building can be entered either via a path beside Aylsham Ex-Servicemen's and Social Club in Hungate Street or through a door on Mill Road close to the junction with Hungate Street marked "Salvation Army".
We are semi-autonomous from our teacher. So that she doesn’t have to do too much admin we look after things like booking the hall and raising the funds needed to hire it and pay her. (A year's membership costs around £170.) Other jobs are taken on by members of the choir such as Bill, who keeps a key to the hall and opens up for us; Paul H., who brings the tea and coffee; and Andrew G., who organises things like our occasional lunches -- not forgetting Richard, who compiles crosswords to keep our minds active between rehearsals!
If you might like to join us, get in touch or drop in on one of our rehearsals. You only need to be a man who likes singing or thinks he might like singing, and be able to come to our rehearsals. You do not need to be an experienced singer or able to read music.
Stephanie has created an extremely useful site for us at Shutterfly with sound files for various song parts, a calendar, practice logs and more. It is password-protected so only asccessible to members of the choir.
